Happy Icelandic Nature Day

Icelandic Nature Day is celebrated today, September 16th. For us at ON Power, the Hengill area is a special place. It is home to the Hellisheiði and Nesjavellir power plants, where we produce hot water and electricity from geothermal energy.

The Hengill area is among the largest high-temperature geothermal areas in Iceland and is connected to three volcanic systems. At the same time, the area is one of the country's most popular outdoor recreation spots, where people enjoy the spectacular nature.

In the Hengill area, one can clearly see how nature and energy production coexist. Underground, geothermal energy simmers, used to heat homes and power society. On the surface are hiking trails, lava fields, hot springs, and valleys that thousands of people enjoy all year round.

ON and Reykjavík Energy, in collaboration with local municipalities, have for years worked on the development and maintenance of outdoor trails in Hengill. Today, there are over 130 kilometers of marked trails for people who want to walk, run, or cycle through the area. Hengill is also a sensitive natural area. Therefore, it is important to stay on marked trails and treat the environment with care.

ON Power places great emphasis on good restoration and land reclamation in the company's power plant areas, and active work is being done to restore natural vegetation and the environment after disturbance.

On Icelandic Nature Day, we keep this especially close to heart and at the same time remind ourselves of the importance of utilizing resources responsibly and treating nature with respect.
