The deep drilling project could strengthen Iceland's position as a leading geothermal nation

Reykjavík Energy is currently preparing to drill a supercritical borehole at Nesjavellir, known as IDDP-3, which is the first step in attempting to utilize geothermal heat exceeding 400°C. In the fourth and final step of the project, the IDDP-3 well will be connected to the power plant of ON Power (Orka náttúrunnar) with the aim of harnessing energy from supercritical geothermal systems for the first time globally.

This is stated in an in-depth report by Morgunblaðið today, featuring interviews with Sævar Freyr Þráinsson, CEO of Reykjavík Energy, and Hera Grímsdóttir, Executive Director of Research and Innovation.

The deep drilling project of Reykjavík Energy, the parent company of ON, has attracted attention for its ambitious goals to extract energy deeper from the country's geothermal systems than ever before. If successful, it could open up new possibilities in domestic energy production and mark a milestone in geothermal utilization.

"We intend to be the first in the world to demonstrate electricity generation from such a well," says Sævar Freyr in the interview.

For ON, the project holds significant future opportunities. Increased utilization of deeper and hotter parts of geothermal systems could strengthen the company's ability to produce renewable energy even more efficiently, improve energy efficiency, and support continued energy security and value creation from Icelandic resources. "This is about utilizing resources better, not just getting more," Sævar Freyr also remarked.
