Students of the Agricultural University of Iceland visiting Hellisheiði

Last week, students in the master's program in ecological restoration at the Agricultural University of Iceland visited Hellisheiði to learn about ON Power's diverse environmental projects.

Magnea Magnúsdóttir, ON Power's Environmental and Reclamation Manager, welcomed the group and presented the measures undertaken in the area to restore ecosystems and mitigate the environmental impact of operations. Following the presentation, a field trip was conducted where the students had the opportunity to inspect the projects firsthand.

Among the sites visited were areas where green hay (seed mulch) has been successfully spread to promote revegetation and enhance biodiversity. They also visited sites where vegetation turf, salvaged during construction work, has been laid over disturbed areas to accelerate the recovery of vegetation and ecosystems.

Additionally, a restored stream in the area, where nature-based solutions have been applied to manage surface water, was inspected. The project is a prime example of how natural processes can be utilized to address environmental challenges in a sustainable manner.

“It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to share the experience we have built up at ON Power. A field visit like this gives students the chance to see how different methods are applied in practice and how energy production, nature conservation, and ecological restoration can be integrated in the same area,” says Magnea.
