Hvað þýðir þetta?

Customers of Orku náttúrunnar have for years purchased their electricity with so-called guarantees of origin without having to pay specifically for them. According to the law, Iceland is part of the European electricity market and thus a participant in the certification system for the origin of electricity. Without these guarantees of origin, the electricity is considered to come from a common energy pool in Europe. The guarantee of origin system was established to support renewable energy production and thus combat global warming. Electricity producers can sell these guarantees of origin on the free market, allowing companies and individuals in Europe to support renewable electricity production.

The reason for these changes is that Landsvirkjun took the initiative and decided that origin certificates will no longer be included and will be sold separately. Several electricity retailers have made the same decision.

Orka náttúrunnar has now decided to do the same

Customers who are without certification may not market themselves as users of renewable electricity.

What does it cost to certify the electricity?

For the year 2024, customers who wish to purchase certified electricity will pay 0.5 ISK excluding VAT for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) used. The table below shows examples of what a customer with a certain annual usage needs to pay to certify their electricity consumption for the year 2024.

Hvert fara tekjur ON af sölu upprunaábyrgða?

The revenues from the sale of origin certificates of Orku náttúrunnar were allocated until 2018 for the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, and since 2019, investments have been and will continue to be made in technology and innovation to make the operations of ON's power plants emission-free, for example, with Carbfix technology.

Environmental issues are very important to us, and therefore we emphasize using the revenues from origin certificates for projects that support the community and the nature we live in.

The origin certificate can be important for companies.

Companies with green accounting do not need origin guarantees, but their carbon footprint will increase significantly without them, especially for those who use a lot of electricity. Thus, a customer who wants to report their carbon footprint is looking at nearly a 60-fold increase in carbon footprint due to electricity usage without origin certification.

The table below, which is by no means exhaustive, shows which parties may find it important that the electricity purchases are origin certified. These are primarily companies that maintain climate accounting where scope two of carbon emissions is specified. Electricity purchases fall under scope two, and if companies do not purchase origin certificates, that carbon footprint is included in the climate accounts as stated in the annual, standardized statement of the relevant electricity seller to the National Energy Authority. The table below clearly shows which parties are affected by origin certification.
