ON specialists at the world's largest geothermal conference

Experts from ON Power are participating in the World Geothermal Congress (WGC), the world's largest geothermal conference, which begins today in Calgary, Canada. WGC is held every three years and brings together the leading experts, scientists, and representatives of the largest companies in the geothermal sector from all over the world.

We Icelanders enjoy a quality of life where geothermal energy is a natural part of our daily lives. We turn on the tap and take a hot shower, go to the swimmingpools on a cold winter's day, and use electricity at all times without giving it a second thought. Internationally, however, the situation is often very different. There, geothermal energy is still a specialized resource that many countries are just beginning to utilize, and in many places, the knowledge and experience that has developed in Iceland for decades is still being built up.

Drilling Program and ON's Geothermal Park

ON's participation in WGC reflects the extensive expertise that has been built up in this country in the utilization of geothermal energy. Iceland is at the forefront in the world when it comes to the sustainable utilization of geothermal energy, and experts from ON and other Icelandic companies play a key role in that development, both here at home and in growing international cooperation.

At the conference, ON's experts will deliver a variety of presentations covering, among other things, innovation in energy utilization, the operation of geothermal power plants, drilling, energy security, and the development of sustainable infrastructure. The presentations reflect the breadth that characterizes ON's operations and the experience the company has developed in operating two of the country's largest geothermal power plants.

One of the presentations will be given by Árni Hrannar Haraldsson, Managing Director of ON, where he will discuss the so-called drilling program, which involves drilling 16 new wells over the next two years  and its importance for secure and sustainable energy production for the future.

The specialized knowledge of Icelandic experts in geothermal energy is not only limited to its direct utilization, but also the circular economy concept on which the ideology of ON's Geothermal Park at the Hellisheiði Power Plant is based. Helga Kristín Jóhannsdóttir, Head of the Geothermal Park, will be among ON's representatives at the conference and will present how the collaboration of companies, science, and innovation within the Geothermal Park has garnered international attention and created new opportunities in full resource utilization and the circular economy.

Icelandic Knowledge Attracts Attention

Geothermal energy has been one of the cornerstones of Icelandic society for decades. The knowledge built up in this country is increasingly attracting attention abroad, especially now as the world grapples with climate change, energy shortages, and energy insecurity, with a massive emphasis on energy transition almost everywhere, and nations seeking ways to secure sustainable and reliable energy sources.

ON's participation in the World Geothermal Congress is part of sharing that experience, strengthening international cooperation, and continuing to develop solutions that support energy transition and a sustainable future, as well as allowing our experts to gain knowledge from other professionals in the industry.
