Geothermal energy and natural hazards are closely related phenomena

The publication of the Icelandic Meteorological Office's new long-term hazard assessment regarding volcanic hazards on the Reykjanes Peninsula has attracted attention and sparked discussion about the state of critical infrastructure. It states, among other things, that geothermal power plants and related structures are located in areas where natural hazards may be present.

Geothermal power plants rely on geothermal heat, which is mainly found in active volcanic and geothermal areas. This means that the natural hazard under discussion here is in fact a prerequisite for the resource that Icelandic society uses every day for district heating, electricity generation, and other things that improve our quality of life.

Therefore, from the outset this risk has been factored into the design and operation of the plants, with the aim of ensuring both safety and operational security in the long term.

Known risk and addressed systematically

ON Power and its parent company, Reykjavík Energy, have for years been building up knowledge and procedures aimed at dealing with the natural hazards associated with operations in geothermal areas. This includes, among other things, continuous monitoring, regular review of risk assessments, and the development of response plans in close cooperation with experts and authorities.

The Meteorological Office's long-term hazard assessment supports this work and provides an even clearer overall picture of possible future developments. Such data are useful for strengthening ongoing work on prevention and development, resilience, and infrastructure operations.

Interaction of nature and society

Geothermal energy is one of the nation's most important resources and the foundation of quality of life in Iceland. Its use requires working in close harmony with nature, respecting it and maintaining a clear view of the risks that accompany it. ON Power places great emphasis on following that policy.

ON Power will continue to emphasize responsible energy production, robust monitoring, and active cooperation with the authorities and society at large  with the aim of ensuring safe and sustainable energy for the future.
