The earthquake swarm has not affected the operation of the Hellisheiði Power Station

For more than a day, an earthquake swarm has been ongoing west of Húsmúli in the Hengill area. According to information from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, over 500 earthquakes have been recorded in the area since the swarm began on the morning of May 31.
The largest earthquake measured magnitude 4.5 at 13:45 today and was clearly felt at the Hellisheiði Power Station. However, the earthquake had no impact on the operation of the power plant, and there has been no disruption to activities. No changes have been made to the operation or reinjection of the Hellisheiði Power Station in recent days.
Earthquakes and earthquake swarms are not uncommon in this area, and a comparable swarm occurred there in June 2024. According to geoscientists' assessment, there is no indication that this is anything other than natural seismic activity.
ON Power has been in contact with the Icelandic Meteorological Office and will continue to closely monitor the development of the situation.
