2024 was a good year for ON Power

The year 2024 was characterized by a variety of projects across all sectors of ON Power, with an emphasis on initiative, progress, sustainability, and outstanding customer service.
The projects varied widely, ranging from the development of innovative projects to the ongoing development of infrastructure with clear goals: to contribute to society and ensure a strong vision for the future in energy matters. For fun and information purposes, we compiled the below overview of the main projects of 2024.
Key Charging Points
We opened a magnificent charging park in Öskjuhlíð featuring 12 chargers, trampolines, a tic-tac-toe panel and benches to enjoy a restful moment.
We opened a charging park at Glerártorg in Akureyri, which also has 12 new and powerful chargers.
We opened our largest charging park in Borgarnes with 14 chargers.
We installed 98 charging stations in Kópavogur at 14 locations.
We began the installation of 20 chargers at five new locations in Reykjavik following a tender.
We enlarged our charging park at Bæjarháls – it now has six new chargers.
Our innovations included setting up a charging bank at Hvolsvöllur, which proved to be a successful and exciting pilot project.
The Big Issues in Power Plants
A new air purification tower was constructed at Hellisheiði Power Plant and will soon be in operation.
We installed a new heat exchanger for separated water, thereby increasing the production capacity of the Nesjavellir power plant.
The Hverahlíð II pipeline was commissioned.
We worked on control system upgrades in Nesjavellir. The project is a significant achievement and the execution was highly complex.
Awards and Recognitions
We ranked highest in the Icelandic Satisfaction Scale for the fifth consecutive year.
We were the highest-ranking electricity supplier in the Sustainability Index.
We received certification from Bureau Veritas for the climate accounting of ON Power and Reykjavik Energy.
We were named “Excellent in Iceland 2024” by business publications Viðskiptablaðið and Keldan.
We received recognition for the tidiest industrial lot in Borgarnes, the premises of our new Charging Parks.
Miscellaneous Fun Facts
The preliminary design of a new bathing lagoon in the Geothermal Park was completed this year.
We launched an RFI interest survey and received a lot of feedback and interest in purchasing 150 megawatts of electric power from ON Power.
We took significant steps towards the energy transition of heavy transport – we signed a letter of intent for the production of hydrogen for hydrogen-powered MAN trucks that will be imported to Iceland soon.
We started working on an Innovation Hub in the Geothermal Park.
A project to build a research facility for geothermal research, housed in the Innovation Hub of ON Power’s Geothermal Park, recently received a grant of ISK 65 million from the University Cooperation Fund. Project partners include the University of Iceland, Reykjavik University, and ON Power.
We signed an agreement with RARIK for the purchase of electricity lost in the distribution system.
Environment and Climate
The world's largest air purification plant, Mammoth, opened at Climeworks in the Geothermal Park.
We restored 6 hectares of areas outside ON Power’s areas of operations that have been eroded, for instance due to sheep grazing.
We secured an electrified and environmentally friendly drill that will be used for drilling the next eight wells.
The construction of a new purification station at Hellisheiði Power Plant was successful, and a purification tower was erected at Hellisheiði Power Plant. With its advent, nearly all carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide from the power plant can be captured using Carbfix technology. The station is expected to be operational this year, making Hellisheiði Power Plant one of the first geothermal power plants in the world to become nearly emission-free.
Sulphur dioxide concentration in the moss at Hellisheiði Power Plant decreased, and moss damage has reduced.
We planted 8,000 birch trees at Hellisheiði Power Plant.
We also utilized hay for land restoration at Hellisheiði.
Events and Guests
We participated in numerous events, including:
UTmessan
Verk og vit
European Researchers’ Night (held by Rannís)
COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan
Reykjavik Energy Science Day
Clean Opportunities – event held by Reykjavik Energy
The Clear Opportunities seminar at Arctic Circle
plus all sorts of other diverse conferences, seminars, and panel discussions.
We hosted three successful conferences this year:
A Decade of ON Power
Energy, Resources and Innovation – where ON Power's Geothermal Park was the main focus
Prioritization in Electricity Shortages
We were prominent in public discussion – wrote numerous articles, participated in interviews, answered questions, and posted a trove of material on social media.
A remarkable number of guests visit us at ON Power each year, becoming acquainted with our diverse activities. In 2024, we welcomed, among other esteemed guests, electrical engineering students from the Comprehensive College of West Iceland, 140 foreign consuls from 71 countries, students from the Agricultural University of Iceland, staff from Samorka, the United Nations Geothermal Training Program, people of all ages who participated in ON Power's fantastic Family Day, and countless groups welcomed by ON Power’s Project Office.
Thank you for the year! We look forward to tackling new projects in 2025 as well as continuing with the projects already underway.
