Slight tectonic movements in Nesjavellir

Recently, minor changes in crustal movements have been detected at Nesjavellir.
Measurements suggest that there is increased land subsidence in a limited area within the production and reinjection zone of the Nesjavellir Power Plant, likely related to movements on faults. Along with this, two small earthquake swarms have been detected in the area.
The cause of the movements is unclear, but geothermal production takes place within an active plate boundary zone, meaning it is to be expected that movements on faults in the area occur due to natural causes or partly as a result of geothermal production.
Geoscientists at Reykjavík Energy have reviewed the situation with experts from the University of Iceland, ÍSOR, and the Icelandic Meteorological Office. At this stage, data do not indicate imminent events or danger. The area will continue to be monitored.
