New white paper on the direct use of geothermal energy

A new white paper on the direct utilization of geothermal energy was presented at a launch event in Elliðaárstöð yesterday. The publication is the result of a collaboration among numerous parties who work closely with Green by Iceland, and have come together to shed light on how geothermal energy can support energy transition, innovation, and sustainable value creation, both in Iceland and internationally.
Direct utilization of geothermal energy plays an important role in Icelandic society and also has significant global value, especially in light of increased emphasis on energy security and reduced fossil fuel use. The goal of the white paper is to increase understanding of practical solutions, share Icelandic knowledge and experience, and demonstrate how geothermal energy can become a key component in sustainable energy transition worldwide.
Representatives from ON Power were among those who participated in the work on the white paper and Hrannar Haraldsson, Managing Director of ON Power, addressed guests at the launch along with Jóhann Páll Jóhannsson, Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate, and Sigurður Hannesson, Director General of the Federation of Icelandic Industries and Chairman of the Board of Green by Iceland.

Iceland in the Forefront
In his speech, Árni Hrannar stated that Iceland was in a unique position to lead development in the field of direct utilization of geothermal energy. "We have built up unique expertise over decades and possess experience that attracts attention worldwide. At Hellisheiði, we see how geothermal energy can be utilized in diverse ways to create value from all streams generated during production," said Árni Hrannar. He pointed out that the operations of ON Geothermal Park at Hellisheiði Power Station are a prime example of the circular economy thinking that characterizes the Icelandic geothermal sector.
The white paper highlights that direct utilization of geothermal energy can create value in numerous industries, from space heating and infrastructure to agriculture, aquaculture, tourism, and industry, while supporting climate goals and sustainable development.
The publication also marks the beginning of an international promotion of the material, as the white paper will be presented at the World Geothermal Congress, which will take place on June 8-11 under the banner of Green by Iceland. There, a large group of Icelandic experts, including from ON Power, will present Iceland's solutions, knowledge, and experience in the field of geothermal energy.
